Yep - I am sure this would be fine, I sometimes use stuffed socks as a toy in my hamster cage, and is a great thing for them to rip and chew - he even used some of the pieces as nesting material icon smile Would it be safe to make a hamster hammock out of a bed sheet?

as you can see from the designs on this site, most are not really hammocks so much as four cornered material suspended by straps, you could just use a thick ropelike string (with no loops so your hamster cant hang him/herself), and maybe do a similar design , but with three corners.. like this>

[though i wouldnt recommend the weird fake fur thing they have used - looks a bit like they might choke :/ just use bed sheet, t-shirt material.. etc and I would suggest using a slightly larger design than on the link, but attaching the strings/rope slightly closer together so that it dips in the middle]
if you check out the rest of the thread by clicking the links in the top right and bottom right (particularly pages 3 and 4) there are loads of pictures of other peoples home made hammocks, and you can get a good idea of how to make it, and what to use

Question by haleythensnaley: How big, and What kind of hook would i need to support an indoor hammock chair from my celeing?
I have a hammock chair, but do not know what type of hook to buy to hang it from my celeing . I am aware that it needs to be attached to a beam for the support.

i heard i need an eyelet screw, but what size?

I'd probably use at least a 4 inch lag bolt to fasten ia hook to the ceiling. It is overkill, but you will never have to worry about it breaking loose.

How would I install a hammock in my room?

Question by Tzu Jaffa: How would I install a hammock in my room?
I want to put some hook screw things in the dry wall studs. and run a cord to a sheet. and its a hammock. But my concern is will the stud support the load I weigh like 160-170. But will I be able to accomplish this using simply some power drill some hook screws and a stud finder or like what stuff should I get if I need more.

Best answer:

Answer by Don
As long as your hooks are heavy enough and you screw into studs you will be ok. Use a small nail to locate the middle of your studs and drill a hole the size of the hook center (without the threads). A 3/8" hook will easily support your weight.

Question by lylymai06: What force would be exerted by each of the two hammock ropes?
A person weighs 612 N. If the person sits in the middle of a hammock that is 3.0 m long and sags 1.0 m below points of support, what force would be exerted by each of the two hammock ropes?
I do get how you got 459N but my friend also got 457N by finding an angle and using trig. Which one could be right?

Best answer:

Answer by Old Science Guy
draw a diagram
the weight is downward from the middle at a point 1.0 m below a horizontal line
the ropes are drawn from the middle back to the horizontal line making sure that they are 1.5 m long
draw a line from the middle back to the horizontal line 1.0 m

the force diagram and the physical diagram will be geometrically similar
take one of the triangles and the rope in that triangle supports half the weight because the weight is in the middle
so use a proportion of corresponding parts of similar triangles
1.5 / 1.0 = Fr / 306
solve for Fr

I get about 459 N

What type of hammock would you recommend?

Question by minortj: What type of hammock would you recommend?
I'm looking for a two person hammock, probably able to hold 500 pounds. It will be used outdoors. I'm looking for something with minimal maintenance yet comfortable. I plan to tie it to two trees versus a hammock stand.

Answer by timmytude
Hanging them on trees looks cool cause you see it on TV, Cartoons, Gilagands Island and stuff, but the stand is actually much better. The stand is more stable, you won't fall off like goofy in the cartoons. I've had both, get a stand - there is no question.
