Superior Hiking Trail Hammock Forums Northern Hang #2 Part 1

This here footage is the Northern Hang #2 on the Superior Hiking Trail in Northern Minnesota. Twenty of us hammock hangers who are all members of HammockForums.net .... the treasure trove of hammock info, got together for 3 nights of backpacking in the cold. Most of us had never met yet it is like hiking with old friends ........ fun for me as I usually solo camp. We started in Crosby Manitou State Park as the SHT (Superior Hiking Trail) runs through it and it is a backpack only park. One of my very favorite spots up there. Had temps of 21º the first night, second night about 23º with snow and high winds and about 23º the last night. Fun for all to test their cold weather systems. Thursday several of us got up there early and camped all over ....... Friday we had a big "meet n' greet" potluck dinner and Saturday walked around 8.30 miles in high winds to camp. Some had really never backpacked and now the hook is set!! Glad for you to be watching our frolic in the piney woods ......... Whoooooo Buddy!

@shugemery Wow man watching that makes me want to find the lighter pack weights! during my last SHT trip (Cascade to Luteson) i figure my pack was as light as it’s been. and it seems as tho you pack many more comforts. as you said i will experiment. if you don’t mind me asking are you a native to northern Minnesota? meaning Duluth or north.
@whiteflamemusic Hey Feller
Check this series of my pack video. It will give you an idea! Go to my vids and scroll down to Shug’s Pack Load for 3 nights on Superior Hiking Trail dated September 25, 2010
It changes a bit trip depending.
Shug
@shugemery wow that’s a light pack. I take it you’re not the guy with a 3 course breakfast lunch and dinner? whats the basic overview of your pack if you don’t mind me asking? for my last trip i think my pack was about 40 pounds for a three day trip and i kinda stripped it to what i consider bare bones. water filter jet boil bug spray lighters hammock knife 3 freeze dried my tarp water gear camera and cotton balls and vasoline.
@whiteflamemusic My pack is around 20 pounds give or take a pound each way and we go 3 or 4 days.
how heavy do you guys pack on a normal hike? whats the usual length of your hikes?

He looks pretty happy there!!
@fustratedfisher
Some you do and some you don’t ……. I often park there and go north or south on the Superior Hiking Trail.
Google MN DNR
Hey bud, the tiredhiker here I was wondering when you go to the Manitou state park do you need to reserve the camp sights in advance, or do you just hike the day then set up camp when you come to a empty sight?
Any info would be great… Thanks for all your help Shane (aka)tiredhiker
They sell grits in MN?!
@Ironboots123
That is terrific …. I will keep going there to keep you in the ‘Sota loop!
Whoooooo Buddy!
Thankee, Shug
Everytime I view these MN videos I miss Minnesota………keep up the backpacking and camping in beautiful northern minni sota….woooobudddy!
a Jacks r Better 10×12 ….. a right goodie eh?
What’s animal control’s tarp
I have never slept in one ….. but the owners of them talk about the absolute flat lay. They do take a bit of a wider tarp set-up due to the spreader bars. some mention shoulder squeeze …. that is my report.
all secure,
Shug
Id like to hear your thoughts (Pros & Cons) on the bridge type hanging system. Would you recommend that style of hammock?
Glad for your interest…..
10-4 on that…..
Way to go! I’ve had the idea of using a hammock instead of a tent for a while… your video shows how a hammock is the way to go! Thanks for posting this.
If you make it to the San Diego area look me up I’ll show you some back country out here.
