How much weight can a ceiling beam hold?
This weekend my wife and I bought hammock chairs. They hang from a single J-Hook/spring mechanism and are meant for a single person. I want to hang them from our front porch.
My question is, how much weight should the ceiling beam be able to hold without collapsing my roof or snapping the beam? The guy who sold them to us said 350 lbs., but I don't know if he was talking about the beam or the chair itself.
For reference, the house is 30 years old. Thanks for your help!
It depends on the dimensions of the beam, Go to American wood products span calculator this will give you the spans and loads acceptable,
If any one joist is not capable of supporting th expected load, you can skew your load points, and put one into one joist and the other end into another joist
2x4 questionable
2x6 or greater you shoul have no problem.
