When most of us think of a hammock we picture ourselves on a white sand beach rocking slowly from side to side on a hammock slung between two palm trees, probably with a drink in our hands. But these days hammocks are available in a variety of styles and materials. They have also made their way from the beach to the backyard or poolside. There are even hammock swings for the porch and hammock chairs. But today we are going to be taking a look at a few basic hammocks as well as the relatively new hammock with stand.
For a long time the most popular kind of outdoor or garden hammock was the classic cotton hammock that could be hung between two trees. But these hammocks are traditionally better-suited for a tropical environment and when used outdoors in the States, people quickly noticed that the weather had a negative effect on them. No only can they be harmed by the sun and rain but it is even possible that outdoor critters like squirrels may damage them.

That is why many of the top hammock makers suggest that you only use cotton hammocks on a covered or enclosed porch or indoors. It is not recommended that you use them outdoors. However, if you are looking for an indoor hammock, cotton is most assuredly king. It is the most durable and comfortable material when used inside.
If on the other hand you are looking to buy an outdoor hammock to place in the backyard or the garden, you should look for a hammock made of nylon. Though nylon is not as comfortable as cotton, it is far more durable in an outdoor environment as it is weatherproof and will not be affected by the elements. Nylon is also an extremely strong fiber and the typical nylon hammock for one can support 350 pounds.
But these days the most popular hammock you can buy is the hammock with stand. These relatively new items offer all the comfort of a cotton hammock with the convenience of a nylon one. The reason for this is simple: you can use a cotton hammock with the stand and simply remove the hammock and take it inside when you are finished with it.
The hammock with stand can also be set up just about anywhere from the porch to the patio to the backyard. Many people will actually put their hammocks by the poolside and sunbath, relax or read during the summer months. The typical hammock with stand has room for two people as it can support up to 450 pounds. This makes it one of the most durable hammocks on the market today.
The overall hammock length is about the same as a regular hammock at 13 feet. And though they are quite durable and can support a lot of weight, the stand itself only weighs about 50 pounds, which means it can be easily moved by two adults.
One of the most popular places to set up a hammock with stand is on the patio. That way you will not kill the grass and you don't have to worry about moving the stand when the seasons change. And whether you have a covered patio or a roofless one, it doesn't matter much. As we mentioned, you can simply remove the hammock from the stand and take it indoors when you are done.

Hammocks and Hammock Stands

Choosing a Hammock
When it comes to choosing a hammock, there are numerous options. Many things need to be considered such as who will use the hammock. Where you will put the hammock. Will it be undercover or exposed to the elements? These questions will determine the style and material of hammock you need to consider before you purchase.
First is style. The most popular hammock is a rope hammock. The rope hammock allows for free air flow and is very durable. Most rope hammocks are made of some type of synthetic rope that is designed to handle the elements. Rope hammocks are also very affordable.
The next style of hammock would be the fabric hammock. Fabric hammocks can be made from a variety of materials from cotton to poly and acrylic fabrics. The synthetic fabrics are usually more resistant to weather and mildew than cotton. Cotton hammocks should not be left exposed and are best suited to the cover of a porch or awning if left outside. Some fabric hammocks are quilted for more comfort. Brazilian, Mayan and Nicaraguan hammocks are examples of fabric hammocks.
All hammocks can be used with a hammock stand or strung between to solid objects such as trees or stable well anchored poles. Hammock stands are a neccessity if you dont have the proper spacing between trees, posts or other hanging points. Hammock stands can be made of wood or metal and vary greatly in price based on the option you choose. Most wooden hammock stands are made of cyprus which can handle the elements better than other woods. Dont skimp when it comes to purchasing a hammock stand as stability of the stand is very important.
The last thing to consider is size. Not all types of hammocks are available in all sizes. Some will only hold one person while others can hold 2 or more. Be sure to look at the weight rating of any hammock that you may be looking at so as to find one that will fit your intended use.
Always be careful when entering or exiting your hammock as hammocks can be unstable. Children should be supervised at all times when using a hammock to avoid an accidental entanglement in the ropes of the hammock.

No one knows for sure just exactly when the cotton rope hammock was invented. It seems as though they have been around forever. Over the years the hammock has been improved. The use of stronger fibers has allowed for the creation of hammocks that are lighter in weight than those that came before them.
These bed type contraptions are constructed in a variety of ways. The horizontal surface can be made of strong, heavy duty fabric, such as canvas or cotton twill. It can also be made of ropes and chords, tied into a fisherman's net type of structure. At either end they are usually gathered and tied to a large ring. The ring is connected to a length of larger, stronger rope that will be used to secure each end of the cotton rope hammock to a suspension point.
Here again, a variety of suspension points can be used to suspend a cotton rope hammock. It is quite common to see a cotton rope hammock suspended on a patio between two of its support columns. Another favorite is a metal framework, which is portable and allows the use of a hammock in any chosen location. My personal favorite is the use of two shade trees, spaced just the right distance apart to allow for installation.
Nothing beats a cotton rope hammock for a well deserved afternoon nap.. As you lay back and feel that cool breeze begin to wash over you, its gentle rocking motion will certainly send you off to la la land.
